Next to Normal is a rock musical that explores the impact of a mother’s worsening bipolar disorder and grief on her family. Diana Goodman struggles with hallucinations of her deceased son, Gabe, while her husband, Dan, endures his own depression. The story centers on her treatment, familial dysfunction, and the search for “normal” rather than perfect.
